Understanding Pure Substances and Mixtures

On April 28, 2026, Ms. Nit Bunna led Grade 6A students in an engaging hands-on science experiment on the topic of "Understanding Pure Substances and Mixtures."

To make abstract concepts tangible and accessible, Teacher Bunna prepared practical, everyday materials for the experiment, including clear glasses, spoons, water, sugar, salt, rice, and iron nails.

During the session, students actively participated in conducting the experiment—mixing ingredients, stirring solutions, and making close observations of physical reactions:

  • Homogeneous Mixtures (Solutions): Students observed how sugar and salt dissolved completely in water, blending uniformly to the point where individual components could no longer be distinguished by the naked eye.

  • Heterogeneous Mixtures: Students examined combinations like rice mixed with iron nails, or rice in water, where the individual substances remained distinct and could easily be separated.

Beyond helping students clearly differentiate between pure substances and mixtures, this hands-on activity served several key educational purposes:

  1. Fostering Scientific Inquiry & Critical Thinking: Encouraging students to observe carefully, analyze cause-and-effect relationships, and draw evidence-based conclusions.

  2. Connecting Theory to Daily Life: Helping learners realize that science is continuously at work all around them in their everyday environment.

  3. Enhancing Teamwork & Collaboration: Creating a fun, interactive learning atmosphere that promoted active peer engagement and cooperation.
